AI Help Bot Invents Nonexistent Coverage

An AI assist bot for the code editor Cursor invented a nonexistent subscription policy, triggering person cancellations and public backlash this week. When developer “BrokenToasterOven” complained about being logged out when switching between units, the corporate’s AI agent “Sam” falsely claimed this was intentional: “Cursor is designed to work with one system per subscription as a core safety function.”

Customers took the fabricated coverage as official, with a number of saying subscription cancellations on Reddit. “I actually simply cancelled my sub,” wrote the unique poster, including that their office was “purging it fully.” Cursor representatives scrambled to appropriate the misinformation: “Hey! We’ve no such coverage. You are after all free to make use of Cursor on a number of machines.” Cofounder Michael Truell later apologized, explaining {that a} backend safety change had unintentionally created login issues.
